Understanding the 4Cs in Lab-Grown Diamonds
Every diamond — lab-grown or natural — is evaluated against the same four criteria: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. These are known universally as the 4Cs, a grading framework pioneered by GIA that remains the global standard for describing diamond quality. Understanding how each C actually affects appearance and price is the single most useful thing you can learn before buying a diamond.
Cut: The Factor That Matters Most
Cut grade measures how well a diamond's proportions, symmetry, and polish allow it to interact with light — and it is widely considered the most important of the 4Cs for visual impact. A diamond with excellent colour and clarity can still look lifeless if it's poorly cut, while a well-cut diamond in a lower colour or clarity grade can still dazzle.
GIA grades cut on a five-tier scale for standard round brilliant diamonds:

Colour: Grading From D to Z
